April, like always, seemed to fly by (figuratively and literally – it was windy!) We had big crowds and big fun. Of course, that meant some really energetic kiddos – they are so ready for summer!

On the afternoon of April 27, a grass fire in northeast Amarillo spread quickly and came dangerously close to Cathy’s Pointe and the North Grand Villas, and those residents were forced to evacuate. Our friends at the Hillside North Grand Campus opened up their doors. We were able to coordinate and get many of our families there to wait out the fire. We helped kids get picked up from school, parents locate kids, and communicate with first responders.

We had over 100 parents and kids at the church, playing games, eating, and waiting out a very scary situation. It was an afternoon of chaos, but we are so grateful the fire was held in check, nobody was injured, and families were back in their hopes by dinnertime. Seeing the community come together in that moment – our schools, our police, our fire, multiple organizations and volunteers – reminds us what a special place Amarillo can be.
We never know what each day will bring around here, but that day was one for the books!
